When asked if they would consider adopting a child, many people say, "Only if I could not have a child of my own." True, babies are adopted so frequently parents turn to other countries for them and there are even kidnappings where the baby is sold. However, kids over the age of four have  a severely decreased chance of getting adopted, and the number goes down each year.

These kids don't just disappear. They go from home to home, are usually separated from their siblings, and can get lost in the system. The group homes, perhaps more commonly known as orphanages, can be anything from a foster home where someone has opened their home to a few kids, to a larger building stuffed to the breaking point with bunk beds and the people running it only know who is there through paperwork.

When these kids turn eighteen they are out. Many go into the military, as there are few options open. Think for a moment though, that you're in college. No going home on the weekends to get your laundry done, no care packages, nothing. When you're not living in the dorm you're in an apartment, trying to work and pay rent.

Now to work... when asked for an emergency contact, most can only write 911. As there is no one they can turn to. So think for a second about what you want. Do you want to have a baby, add another life to the vast existing population, or would you rather adopt a child- and their siblings with any luck- and give that child the life you would dream for your own?

If you died and your kids were left to strangers, wouldn't you want someone to care for them? Why is it any different this way? I'm not even beginning to say these kids are a charity case to be pitied. I'm just saying that we are a society. A community. Most religions say we are all family.

Well there are family members, daughters and sons, being forgotten, and I know it's time to take notice.

On a final note, because I really don't feel like fighting my own friends on this issue. Yes, it's hard. Yes, it's expensive. But it could mean the difference of life or death to a child in need. That, to me at least, is worth fighting for.
